Strabismus Surgery

The surgical outcome is strongly influenced by the location and total size of incisions. The three most frequent squint surgery incisions are MISS, at the limbus, and in the fornix.

Minimally invasive eye surgery (MISS) incisions

  • Eye muscles are operated through several, small keyhole incisions located far from the highly sensitive cornea
  • If necessary, tunnels are created between the incisions
  • MISS minimizes tissue disruption by not completely exposing the eye muscles, not displacing the incisions, and using transconjunctival suturing techniques

Limbal incision

  • Eye muscles are operated through one large u-shaped incision reaching the highly sensitive cornea
  • Considerable tissue disruption is necessary in order to expose the muscles

Fornix incision

  • Eye muscles are operated by displacing one large incision located far from the highly sensitive cornea
  • The displacement induces unnecessary tissue disruption and may induce conjunctival tearing
